Clinical outcomes for pediatric scoliosis treatment 2026

Clinical outcomes collected at Texas Spine and Scoliosis for pediatric and adolescent scoliosis treatment involves patient forms completed before and after treatment at various intervals. Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO) are considered to be the most valid measurement of clinical are related to the patient's assessment of their function ain level, self image, mental health and satisfaction of the care provided by the clinicians at Texas Spine and Scoliosis. While all patients treated had a significant reduction in spinal curve to reduce damage to internal organs and extend lifespan, these charts document additional "Patient Reported" benefits.

Patients reported that after surgery, their self image improved from 3.21 before surgery to 4.35 out of 5. Patients also reported a reduction in pain, from 3.88 to 4.39 after scoliosis correction, and a 4.5 rating for overall satisfaction with their care. The charts show patient reported improvement in the categories of: FUNCTION, PAIN, SELF IMAGE, MENTAL HEALTH, and SATISFACTION WITH CARE.

The OSWESTRY is a standardized spine assessment tool used for 50 years within the spine field that measures a patient’s function over a range of activities and compares that to a national database. SRS stands for data assembled over decades by the Scoliosis Research Society, the most respected international group of scoliosis specialists. The data presented here is collected and aggregated by a clinical outcome data professional within the spine center.

Dr. Matthew Geck is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and is referred pediatric, adolescent and adult scoliosis patients from across the United States. He teams with Dr. Rory Mayer, a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon, who specializes in adult scoliosis. The team of orthopedic spine surgeon and neurospine surgeon represents the ideal combination for the benefit of patients with scoliosis, spinal curves, flatback syndrome, other spine deformity and spinal tumor.

The Setting Scoliosis Straight/Surgeon Performance Project is a quality improvement initiative that came out of Dr. Harry Shufflebarger's work with the Harms Study Group. In this database, surgeons who specialize in pediatric scoliosis enter their patient processes, results, and complications into a database and compare them. This system is designed to promote quality improvement in scoliosis care by providing detailed feedback and benchmarking data. Dr. Geck consistently performs in the top quartile for least EBL per level operated on, most correction, and least major complications. Dr. Geck has been participating in this initiative since its inception in 2019, with yearly and conglomerated data presented here.

Deformity patients reduced their disability significantly after surgery as measured by the Oswestry functional assessment tool. Deformity patients documented significant and stable improvement for kyphosis and scoliosis and improved scores across after corrective surgery as measured by the Oswestry functional assessment tool.

Cystal Apple Award

Dr. Geck has won the Crystal Apple in 2011 and 2014 for highest scoring doc for patients responding:
